Just book with these guys, they are the best and I work in the industry! Had an amazing trip with Explorers Passage. Everyone from the start was so friendly and courteous and this got even better when we arrived in Chile. Guides, drivers and hotel staff were out of the world.
Couple this with the stunning scenery and it’s one of my top vacation ever!”

“Explorer’s Passage made our W trek adventure not only possible but seamless and amazing. It was clear from the start that they had thought of everything – from the transfers to tickets to gear. We were very prepared from all their detailed checklists and training guide. And we knew what to expect from all our pre-trip calls and emails. The level of detail in all they do is remarkable. We were able to enjoy the adventure that much more because we had so much trust in their guidance as well as execution of all those details.”

“My wife and I just got back from Patagonia after completing the W Trek that Explorers Passage had arranged for us. From our first contact with Jeff Bonaldi to our last transfer, our experience was stellar. Jeff guided us through the rather complicated logistics and was very responsive to concerns before and during the adventure. His focus was always on how to make the adventure memorable not on the bottom line for his company. I rarely write reviews but felt compelled to do so because our experience was beyond 5 stars.”

Frequently Asked Questions

We recommend spending at least seven days in Argentina. That allows enough time to check off some of the most iconic highlights of the country, including the tango halls of old Buenos Aires and the jagged peaks of Patagonia. But you could spend weeks and weeks here exploring everything from the wine regions to the Pampas to the isles of Tierra del Fuego.

For many, the best time to visit Argentine Patagonia is from November to March. These months arguably offer the finest weather and mildest temperatures. It’s also the peak trekking season in Patagonia, though busier trails mean that some travelers prefer to dodge the crowds and visit in October or April (but there’s more rain during this time).

The best trekking destinations in Argentina can all be found in the southernmost region of Patagonia. Chief among them is surely El Chaltén, the self-proclaimed “Trekking Capital of Argentina.” It’s a well-appointed hiking town with great hotels and lodges, all in the shadow of the mighty Fitz Roy massif. There are also fantastic hikes to be done in El Calafate, Tierra del Fuego (Ushuaia), and throughout Argentina’s Lake District (Bariloche) especially.

The Tierra del Fuego region of southern Patagonia is known for its dramatic landscapes and rare wildlife. A huge section of it in Argentina is now a designated national park, made up of sub-antarctic forests and frozen mountain ice fields. You can go there to see penguins and hike coastal trails on the very edge of the continent.

The statistics show that Argentina is one of the safer countries in South America for visitors. Big cities like Buenos Aires and Mendoza do have certain areas that are to be avoided, but you’re not likely to visit them on your trip during organized tour experiences. Rural Argentina and Patagonia, meanwhile, are extremely welcoming regions, where the biggest risks will probably be natural disasters. Regardless of where you are though, it’s best to remain vigilant and stay aware of your surroundings.

It can get cold in Patagonia. From June to August – the coldest time of the year – the nights can see temperatures plummet into the 20s°F (-7°C) at ground level, while it can easily get much colder in high-up trekking towns such as El Chaltén. From November to March, when most people visit, it is a lot warmer than that, though the region still sees big fluctuations in temperatures, ranging around 55-70s°F (13-22°C).

Argentina is generally seen as a low-cost destination compared to places in Western Europe and the U.S., but more expensive than other South American countries. That said, the economy here has been extremely volatile in recent years. The local currency, the peso, collapsed in value recently, pushing up demand for stable currencies like the USD and EUR. The upshot? Argentina is now a great bargain for foreign travelers, who can make use of very favorable exchange rates to make their money go further.
